Ocean Epoxy Art

Introduction

For the past 3 to 4 years, I harbored a dream of creating an epoxy ocean coffee ART or art piece adorned with fish, shells, whales, and more. The primary hurdle was the cost of epoxy, coupled with a lack of confidence in my ability to execute the project. However, recent developments and a collaboration with JDiction changed the game. In this article, I'll detail the journey of bringing this long-cherished project to life.

Choosing Quality Live Edge

Opting for a cherry slab off-cut acquired for a mere $5, I saw potential in its unique features, particularly the sapwood at the end. The initial steps involved milling the slab to achieve a uniform thickness, flattening it with a DIY planer sled, and refining its length.

The Catalyst: JDiction's Epoxy

The turning point came when JDiction offered to supply the required epoxy for the project. Using their deep pour epoxy, known for self-leveling, anti-yellowing, and crystal-clear results, I embarked on the intricate process of creating an epoxy ocean masterpiece.

The Epoxy Pours

A total of three pours were executed. The first introduced a dark-tinted epoxy at the bottom with a wave effect. The second, initially marred by bubbles, ultimately clarified thanks to JDiction's self-defoaming feature. The third pour followed suit, and a time-lapse video showcased the mesmerizing self-defoaming process.

Artistic Challenges and Solutions

Placing fish, whales, and sea creatures posed artistic challenges, especially with the dissolution of the white pigment. However, strategic sanding and a unique approach with CA glue proved successful in salvaging the piece.

Finishing Touches

Post-demolding, the piece underwent final dimensioning with a jointer and table saw. Rubio Monocoat, a reliable finish, enhanced the aesthetic. For the base, crafted from sapwood waste, dados were created to seamlessly integrate the ocean art piece.

Reflections and Future Considerations

Initial concerns about bubbles were dispelled, affirming the choice of JDiction's deep-pour epoxy. Plans for LED lights were abandoned for the time being, leaving room for potential future experimentation.
